Passengers Welfare Association of Kenya (PWAK) has since its inception been involved in protecting the rights of passengers while they are travelling through public means of transport and training them on safety measures during travelling. The nation has been losing many lives through accidents.
This poses a negative effect on the economy of the country.Lives are lost due to careless driving, ignorance on safety measures and lack of rapid response incase an accident occurs. There is also urgent need for First Aid training as an emergency weapon to remedy loss of lives whenever accidents occur.
PWAK’s overall objective for this activity as it relates to the society’s purposes, core program and goals within the country is to, To ensure reduction in preventable accidents by 80% in Kenyan roads, sea and rail by 2014.
The reason for this initiative was to ensure that passengers are safe from all forms of harassment and mistreatment as they travel. A number of cases have been reported to us so far. However, some sensitization is required for the public to know us well.
The main objective of this initiative is to identify causes of road accidents. These have been identified mainly as follows: Overspeeding, obstruction, dangerous overtaking, poor vehicle maintenance among others.
From experience, accident victims and their kin, take years to get compensated from insurance companies. We ensure that all insurance claims are paid.
We ensure that passengers are safe from all forms of harassment and mistreatment as they travel. Several arrests have been made under our instructions and drivers and conductors charged in court.
We are fully equipped with latest technology to help us reach out to those passengers who need us all over the country.
We have fully equipped training workshops that have helped us train our members on how to be vigilant as they travel.
